Hours & Planning: Maximize Your Experience

Opening Hours

  • Daily Operation The museum and its historical vessels are open seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Final Admissions The final entry to the main museum building and the last boarding call for the historic cruiser Olympia occurs at 4:30 PM daily.
  • Holiday Closures The entire facility is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, with early closures typically scheduled for Christmas Eve.

Best Times to Visit

  • Beat the Crowds Weekday mornings between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM offer the quietest gallery spaces, providing unobstructed access to interactive exhibits like River Alive!.

Essential Visitor Guidelines

Respect Historic Artifacts: To protect our shared maritime history, please do not touch, climb on, or alter any of the historical machinery, weapon systems, or exhibits inside the galleries or aboard the vessels.

Supervise Children at All Times: The museum and historic ships feature steep drops, narrow corridors, and open water views. For safety, children under the age of 16 must remain accompanied by an adult throughout their entire visit.

Photography Limitations: Commercial filming and flash photography are strictly prohibited inside the main galleries and ship interiors without prior administrative approval. Standard, personal handheld photography is highly encouraged.

No Smoking or Vaping: The entire museum complex, including the outdoor dock spaces, gangways, and the exterior wooden decks of Cruiser Olympia and Submarine Becuna, is a strictly smoke-free environment.

Baggage Restraints: Large backpacks, luggage, and oversized bags are not permitted inside the tight confines of the submarine or historic cruiser. Guests are encouraged to leave bulky items in their vehicles, as on-site storage locker space is limited.

FAQs

Are the historic ships open during inclement weather?

The main museum building and indoor galleries remain open rain or shine. However, for the safety of our guests, access to the outdoor decks of Cruiser Olympia and Submarine Becuna may be temporarily suspended during severe weather events, such as high winds, heavy rain, lightning, or icy conditions.

Can I bring my own food and drinks into the museum?

Outside food and beverages are not permitted inside the indoor exhibition galleries or aboard the historic ships to protect the artifacts and prevent pests. Guests may bring sealed bottles of water. If you pack a lunch, open-air public seating areas are widely available across the surrounding Penn's Landing plaza.

How long does a typical visit take?

Most visitors spend between 2 and 3 hours exploring the entire complex. This includes roughly 1 hour for the indoor galleries and the River Alive! science lab, and another 1 to 1.5 hours to thoroughly tour the decks and interior spaces of both historic vessels.

What happens if I arrive after the final admission time?

The museum building and historic ships close promptly at 5:00 PM, with the final daily admission cut-off at 4:30 PM. Guests arriving after 4:30 PM will not be permitted entry, as a minimum of 30 minutes is required to safely walk through the vessels before closing operations begin.

Can I bring a stroller on board the cruiser or the submarine?

No. Due to the tight corridors, narrow watertight hatches, and steep naval ladders, strollers cannot be brought onto Cruiser Olympia or Submarine Becuna. Designated stroller parking areas are available near the gangways of the ships, but strollers are fully welcome inside the main, spacious museum building.

Do I need to print my online tickets?

No, physical printing is not required. You can simply present the digital tickets and barcodes on your smartphone or mobile device at the main admission desk upon arrival for a quick, contactless check-in.
